The Queen seen with mystery bruise on her leg on official visit to school
Royal aides would not comment on the cause of the bruise, just above her right ankle, but she did not appear to be in any discomfort
The Queen sported a big bruise on her right leg today when she visited a school to mark its 475th anniversary.
Buckingham Palace refused to say how she came by the bruise just above her ankle which was clearly visible as she walked in the sunshine.
There was speculation she had had a nasty fall, perhaps out horse riding, or had banged into something, but royal aides would not say what the cause was.
However the 90-year-old Queen did not appear in any discomfort and walked without a limp during a three-hour visit to £11,320 per year Berkhamsted School in Hertfordshire.
She is patron of the co-educational school, founded initially to teach boys in 1541 by John Incent, Dean of St Paul’s.
But she has more than 600 patronages and it was the first time a reigning monarch had ever visited, although the Queen Mother did tour the school in 1958.
In a fuchsia coat and dress by Stewart Parvin, the Queen strolled around the school in the bright spring sunshine, meeting staff, pupils, and local community groups that work with the students.

In a marquee she was introduced individually to 100 people from local community groups that work in partnership with pupils.
One group of pupils performed part of The Lion King for her outside on the quadrangle.
The Queen also inspected the school’s Combined Cadet Force, which is the oldest in the country and is celebrating its 125th anniversary.
The school’s former pupils include novelist Graham Greene, who had an unhappy time there while his father was headmaster and once described the townspeople as “slitty-eyed and devious”.
Other famous alumni include Sir Winston Churchill ’s wife Clementine, fascist AK Chesterton, the National Front’s first chairman, and round-the-world yachtsman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, who greeted the Queen yesterday.
“So you’re an old boy?” she asked, before chatting to him over lunch.

“She was telling me about Princess Anne and her enthusiasm for the game,” said Sir Robin, 77, who completed the first non-stop circumnavigation of the globe in 1969.
“It’s a tremendous day for the school,” he said.
“To have lasted 475 years shows we have done fairly well.
“It’s a good school and it was when I was here.”
Before she left, the Queen unveiled a plaque and was presented with a leather bound copy of the school’s history as well as a framed montage of photographs of her mother’s 1958 visit.
Richard Backhouse, the principal, said it had been a day to remember for everyone at the school.
He noted that 1,200 children in the quadrangle had fallen silent in awe when the Queen arrived.
He said: “For 1,200 children to go silent is not a normal thing.
“They will still be talking about this in their dotage.”
